Extra-mural activities
Extra-mural activities offered at Derona include the following sporting activities: soccer, netball, cricket, athletics, hockey, and kickboxing. (Because of COVID-19, these activities may change without notice.)
Derona supports learning through the arts, such as visual arts, dance & drama. These programs allow learners to shine in these areas. Other cultural activities include choir and chess.
We focus on creating a sense of wellbeing in our learners and support their achievement through empowering them to have the confidence to succeed. That is to say, we believe in supporting our learners through developing life skills that enable them to flourish after school.
Our learners are encouraged to embrace all activities as an opportunity to expand their experiences, develop skills and find new passions. In addition, involvement in all aspects of school life increases each their sense of belonging and expands friendships.
Extra-mural benefits
Many benefits come with encouraging your child to partake in extra-mural activities.
These benefits can be divided into three categories: health, social and intellectual development.
Health benefits
Physical extra-murals like sports are crucial for the physical development of your child. As a result, it aids in the growth and stimulation of several muscle groups. Outdoor sports are especially important because they keep kids active. In short, it is essential for their physical and mental wellbeing.
You engage in friendly competition with your schoolmates, have an easier time maintaining healthy body weight, and have a lower risk of developing obesity. When you play well and win games, you gain a sense of accomplishment, which helps shape self-esteem.
Intellectual benefits
Extra-murals also serve the purpose of teaching kids how to solve spontaneous problems. As a result, this experience is a fundamental building block to educate children on how to become valuable and productive citizens.
In conclusion, physical and psychological exercise is an important stepping stone to improving the creativity children have. It shapes their natural curiosities and worldviews and teaches them character.

Social benefits
Above all, children need to learn very early on how to interact with society. Extra-mural activities are social activities that encourage kids to interact with their peers. Likewise, this teaches them social etiquette and the necessary skills needed to nurture robust networks and socialise with the world.
Because of the competitive nature of sports and cultural extra-murals, these activities can nurture the ‘leader gene’ in children and teach them how to take charge of certain situations. The essential character-building skills kids learn through extra-murals can mean the difference between them growing up to be leaders or followers.
