Policy regarding the Language of education
Chosen languages of education are English and Afrikaans.
Derona Academy prides itself on offering an education program based on creative, independent doing and thinking. The Academy is an independent, private school for boys and girls in grades R through 12. Our academic programs give learners room to excel, develop, and solve problems.
The education program at Derona Academy is at the heart of our school, and the school’s mission is lived out daily in the wide array of rich learning experiences. Therefore, we aim to nurture learners’ natural passion for learning and to instil habits of life-long curiosity and reflection. They become strong readers, effective writers, and capable mathematicians. Furthermore, we teach them that they must work hard, but that learning can be fun.
Our approach to teaching, student leadership, and community service reflect our hope that we will instil in learners our most deeply held values. Values of kindness, respect, responsibility and to be our best. We believe our learners graduate from the Academy knowing how to think; how to understand their worldview and those of others. Also, how to find and then evaluate information; and how to communicate authentically.
Derona Academy provides education in the following phases:
Learners at Derona Academy are organized by grade into four phases, Grades R-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. First, these groupings allow for small, close-knit, and nurturing environments able to serve the needs and interests of all learners. Therefore, each phase provides learners with a comfortable, supportive atmosphere in which to learn and thrive. Lastly, the four phases often work together in all-school assemblies and school-wide projects.
